Kitchen, Mudroom & Spa
MD Design Co. is a Denver-based interior design firm whose work spans new construction, full home remodels, kitchen and bath renovations, furnishings, and out-of-state projects—from concept to completion. For the showhouse, the kitchen, mudroom, and spa were designed by founder and lead designer Marcella Domonkos, highlighting the firm’s signature approach to cohesive, lifestyle-driven design.
The firm’s clients are lovers of comfortable living, and MD Design Co. strives to bring relaxed, inviting design to every space—homes where clients can feel proud of their surroundings and inspired every day. The team gravitates toward colors found in nature, often balancing light and airy palettes with purposeful, moody moments.
Styles that best describe the firm’s aesthetic include European modern, traditional, cottage, Spanish modern, eclectic, and bohemian. Rather than adhering to a single style, MD Design Co. enjoys blending influences in thoughtful ways. Form and function are always central to the process, and cohesive design throughout the home is a hallmark of the firm’s work.
The firm’s guiding philosophy is simple: a well-designed home is functional, cohesive, and inspires you to live your best life. Your home is a reflection of your style—let’s make it shine.

How did you incorporate the Modern Colonial style into your spaces?
In the kitchen, it started with the cabinetry. We wanted the space to feel as though you stepped back in time while still keeping modern amenities within reach. The pill-shaped island and ogee edging on the countertops help the space feel decades old, while the modern faucet, appliances, oversized column refrigeration, and layout provide contemporary functionality.
We also incorporated smaller details that nod to the past, such as the stone lip ledge designed to hold everyday cooking oils and spices, as well as the cabinet finish. We opted for a moody, saturated brown-gray that feels timeless, paired with a darker wood stain on the island.
Is there a signature element you always use in your designs? What is it in your space?
One of our signature elements is a highly curated color palette. We typically gravitate toward colors found in nature—shades that do not overstimulate or demand attention. Our goal is to keep the eye moving and create a space that feels like a warm hug. We consider it a success when a client can’t point to one specific detail but instead simply feels that the entire space works beautifully.
In this kitchen, the perimeter cabinet color plays that role. We wanted it to relate to the island stain without feeling redundant. The moody brown adds depth and a sense of vintage luxury to the heart of the home.
What did you include in your space to make it not only look great but also function well?
Behind the main kitchen, we designed a scullery that includes both a dishwasher and a sink. While some might refer to this space as a butler’s pantry, it is technically a scullery. We’ve found that homeowners increasingly want to incorporate functional spaces that were popular in earlier eras, and the scullery is one of those rooms making a comeback.
By definition, a scullery is designed for the “mess,” while a butler’s pantry is typically used for prep and serving. Located just behind the main kitchen, it functions as a true back kitchen, allowing the primary space to remain clean and organized.
